Professional Development Track: Speed Networking Evening

Monday, May 28, 2018
Off-Site: State & Main

*This event is sold out*

The two-part Speed Networking Evening will provide graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with the opportunity to learn about various career paths and the skills required for each, practice their high-level communication skills through speed networking, and expand their professional networks during a relaxed mixer with representatives from chemistry-related organizations.

Part 1: Speed Networking (18:30-20:30)

Participants (students & postdocs) will be organized into groups of 4-5 and seated with 1-2 representatives from a chemistry-related organization for 10 minutes each.

The representatives will first have three minutes to speak about their company/team, the role of chemistry in it, and the key skills that they use in their role or value in their colleagues. Each student/postdoc participant will then be given one minute to outline their professional interests, current expertise and credential(s), and any career paths or sectors that may be of interest to them. After each participant in that group has said their introduction, any remaining time can be used to ask more specific questions about that organization, the representative's role and responsibilities, or the representative’s career path in chemistry.

After 10 minutes, a bell will ring and the representatives will rotate to the next group. Each participant will see representatives from 12 organizations over the course of the evening.

Part 2: Mixer (20:30-21:30)

Students, postdocs, and company representatives will have the opportunity to continue their discussions and to network over a casual drink. This mixer is an excellent opportunity to expand your professional network and to have follow-up conversations that arose during the Speed Networking activity. Meet your future colleagues, share your own passions in more detail, and ask questions. Appetizers and 1 drink ticket per person will be provided.

The Speed Networking Evening is sold out.
